1) Uni-Start Equity Scholarship 2016/ 2017

University Name: Griffith University
About: Awarded to students who have experienced financial hardship, and/or education disadvantage that has impacted on their ability to achieve their full potential.
Field of study: All undergraduate
Eligibility: All prospective and current domestic undergraduate students planning to study at any Griffith University campus are eligible to apply for an Equity Scholarship. To be eligible for an Equity Scholarship, the applicant must:

  • be a domestic undergraduate student (this includes school leavers and non-school leavers, commencing and continuing students);
  • demonstrate financial disadvantage by either:
    • being in receipt of a means-tested Commonwealth income support payment; or
    • a comprehensive assessment by the University.
  • not have completed the requirements for an Australian Bachelor award unless such an award is a pre-requisite to their undergraduate program of enrolment and there is no alternate pathway into that program.

2) La Trobe Access Scholarship 2016/ 2017

  • Faculty of Science, Technology and Engineering

Eligibility: To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you must:

  • not have already applied for a scholarships through the VTAC scholarship application
  • be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or holder of an Australian permanent resident visa or permanent humanitarian visa; and
  • be a commencing the first year of your first Bachelor in Semester 2, 2015 (commencing students are defined as those starting a university course at first year undergraduate level for the first time at any institution.); and
  • meet criteria for educational disadvantage (financial, caring for others, non-English speaking background, disability, or other hardship or disadvantage.)

Each year La Trobe University offers a number of scholarships to students commencing tertiary studies for the first time who can demonstrate financial hardship and/or educational disadvantage.

3) Michael Malthouse Elite Sports Bursary 2016/ 2017

  • be currently competing at state, national or international level in their chosen sport. The chosen sport must be recognised by one of the listed organisations* or if not, the applicant must apply to the University for an exception to be made; and
  • be supported by referee reports

*Australian Institute of Sport, State Institutes or Academies of Sport, AFL Players Association, Australian Cricketers Association, Rugby Union Players Association, Rugby League Professionals Association, Australian Professional Footballers Association, National squad members from Australian Sports Commission funded sports.

4) Central Coast Campus Equity Scholarships 2016/ 2017

About: The aim of the scholarship is to assist financially disadvantaged students to study across the full range of programs offered at the Central Coast campus of the University of Newcastle. Fifteen (15) scholarships will be awarded. Applicable to: financially disadvantaged, Ourimbah, Central Coast, first year, 1st year, equity, Low Income Health Care Card.

5) The Expert Editor :A Better Australia Scholarship Program 2016/ 2017

About: The Expert Editor awards one scholarship each year to a student in Australia intent on making the country a better place, and wants to recognise and reward students with initiative, ambition and lofty idealism.

The Expert Editor Scholarship Program awards one $1000 scholarship each year to a high performing student in Australia that intends to make a positive impact to the country’s future.

Eligibility: To be eligible for this scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

  • A full-time student enrolled in an undergraduate degree at an accredited university in the Australia.
  • An Australian citizen, or permanent resident. International students are welcome to apply, but they must demonstrate how they will see through their change-making agenda after they graduate.

How to apply: To be awarded this scholarship, students must outline in around 200 words how they intend to change Australia. Please email your entry to scholarship@experteditor.com.au and include your name, university and contact details.
The deadline for this year’s scholarship program is 31 December and the winner will be announced on 14 January.

6) Menzies Scholarships to Harvard in 2016/ 2017

About: Sponsored by The Harvard Club of Australia, The Menzies Foundation and The Australian National University.

The Robert Gordon Menzies Scholarships to Harvard are Australia’s most prestigious national awards for postgraduate study in the United States. Inaugurated in 1967 by prominent Australian alumni of Harvard to honour the Australian statesman and former Prime Minister, the Menzies Scholarship grants at least one annual award to talented Australians who have gained admission to a Harvard graduate school. The ideal candidates for the Scholarship are Australians whose primary objective, after completing their studies at Harvard, is to make a significant contribution to this country’s development.
Field of study: All faculties
Eligibility: Competition for the Menzies Scholarships is extremely competitive and candidates selected for interview are of outstanding quality.
To be considered for a Menzies Scholarship, you must be an Honours graduate (or equivalent) of an Australian university or other recognised Australian tertiary institution and:

  • be an Australian citizen, or have permanent resident status, and normally reside in Australia
  • intend to return to Australia after completing your studies or to directly represent Australia overseas
  • have not commenced or previously undertaken a postgraduate degree course at a United States university; and
  • you must not have accepted another major scholarship (such as a Knox, Fulbright or Monash Award).

You must also have applied to the Harvard graduate school of your choice, and either been accepted or be confident about meeting its admission requirements and deadlines.

You must also address these criteria:

  • qualities of intellect – as demonstrated through academic achievement and likely benefit from study at a Harvard graduate school
  • qualities of leadership – as demonstrated by prominence in your chosen field or by involvement in, for example, community affairs
  • breadth of vision – as evidenced by the way you look at your present or intended profession in relation to its contribution to Australia and the Australian community.

If selected for interview, we will request original academic transcripts. Please do not post your application by Registered Post.

To be considered for a Menzies Scholarship, you must submit a completed Application Form with your original academic transcript/s and a Statement of Purpose of no more than two A4 pages. The Statement should include relevant details of your background (including community and recreational interests and, if relevant, career-to-date), personal philosophy, aspirations and future career plans, and how you believe you can contribute to the future interests of Australia. The Selection Committee will not be able to consider statements over two pages or any additional documents, other than those requested.

7) RSPCA Australia Scholarships 2016/ 2017

About: Every year, RSPCA Australia offers two scholarships to encourage students to take an active interest in animal welfare issues, to support animal welfare research that might not otherwise attract funding, and to promote the objectives of the RSPCA within the research community.
The RSPCA Australia Alan White Scholarship is offered to students for the funding of original research aimed at improving the welfare of animals in Australia. The RSPCA Australia Scholarship for Humane Animal Production Research is for specific projects aimed at improving the welfare of production animals.

  • RSPCA Australia Alan White Scholarship for Animal Welfare Research – The RSPCA Australia Alan White Scholarship for Animal Welfare Research was established in 1989 to advance the cause of animal welfare in Australia. The scholarship is named after Mr Alan White, a past President of RSPCA Australia and a past President of RSPCA Queensland. The Alan White Scholarship is available to full-time or part-time students in Australian tertiary institutions for the funding of original research aimed at improving the welfare of animals in Australia. The 2015 scholarship award will be for $8,364 and can be used towards any area of research that fits the general scholarship criteria.
  • RSPCA Australia Scholarship for Humane Animal Production Research – This scholarship category is available for individual research projects that are related to the development of humane alternative animal production systems. These awards are funded by the royalties accrued from the RSPCA Australia Approved Farming Scheme. The 2015 scholarship award will be for $8,364 and is available to full-time or part-time students in Australian tertiary institutions. Applications can be made for research involving any livestock animal, but projects relating to alternative housing and husbandry systems for pigs and poultry are particularly encouraged.

Field of study: All faculties
Eligibility: The following general criteria apply to applications for either type of award:

  1. Applications should be for a discrete research project (which may or may not form part of a larger research program).
  2. Applicants must demonstrate in their application that their proposed research project is supportive of the policies of RSPCA Australia and will be used to further animal welfare in Australia. All current policies (http://kb.rspca.org.au/?CategoryID=76) can be viewed on the RSPCA Australia Knowledge Base.
  3. Applicants must be enrolled in full-time or part-time education in an accredited course at an Australian University or College in the year their application is considered.
  4. The Scholarships are not restricted to any particular academic discipline. However, applicants demonstrating a major commitment to and/or involvement with animal welfare issues are strongly favoured.

8) Westpac Future Leaders Scholarship 2016/ 2017

About: This scholarship was established in July 2015 by the Westpac Bicentennial Foundation as part of Westpac’s 200th anniversary celebrations, which will be officially commemorated in 2017.
The scholarship is being awarded to postgraduate students who are undertaking a Masters by coursework or research or a PhD at one of nine participating world-class universities – which include ANU. In addition to demonstrating academic excellence in their own field of study, Westpac Future Leader Scholars will have the desire and potential to become leaders, inspire others and build collaborative networks across disciplines, and have a vision to contribute to the growth and prosperity of Australia.
Field of study: All faculties
Eligibility: To be eligible for a Westpac Future Leaders Scholarship, you must:

  • Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • Have completed an undergraduate degree within the last five years, or will complete in the year of application
  • Have achieved or are on track to achieve an average result of H1 or H2A equivalent
  • Have chosen to undertake a Masters by coursework or research or a PhD at one of Westpac’s nine participating universities* with demonstrated world-class capability in the proposed area of study
  • Must commence study following the year of the application
  • Your proposed program of study:
  • Can be in any field of world-class standing and must be relevant to the Foundation’s focus areas
  • Include international opportunities, such as a period of study at an overseas university, a presentation at a conference significant to the discipline, or an internship or placement at an overseas organisation which will develop your leadership skills and global networks
  • Must underpin a worthy and viable post-study plan that benefits Australia.

9) Bursary for students with a disability 2016/ 2017

About: Applications are assessed and awarded at the discretion of a committee and may include a personal interview. The Committee will determine the amount of any bursary granted.
Bursaries for students with a disability are awarded subject to availability of funds up to a maximum total of 40 weeks for undergraduate and 48 for graduate students.
Bursaries granted to students living in an ANU Hall or affiliated residence will be paid directly to the residence to offset the student’s rent account.
Field of study: All faculties
Eligibility: students must:

  • Be an enrolled ANU student.
  • Be enrolled as a candidate for an ANU award.
  • Be HECS-HELP liable student, deferring in full HECS-HELP loan payment (except New Zealand students who are liable to pay upfront)*.
  • Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen (or dual citizenship holder of either country), Australian permanent resident or a Holder of an Australian humanitarian visa*.
  • Be registered with the Disability Services Centre as a student with a disability.
  • Be able to demonstrate financial hardship*.
  • Not be in receipt of a substantial scholarship or financial assistance from any other source over $5,000 (e.g. residential hall bursary). Recipients of the ANU Access Scholarship are still eligible^.

10) William McIlrath Rural Scholarship 2016/ 2017

University Name: UNSW Sydney
About: The William McIlrath Rural Scholarship is established to encourage and assist rural students from NSW to undertake a full-time undergraduate program in the following UNSW Faculties: Science, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Built Environment and the Australian School of Business.
The scholarship is valued at $10,000 for the first year and $4,000 pa thereafter, for the normal duration of program up to a maximum of 4 years.
Field of study: Science, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Built Environment and the Australian School of Business.
Eligibility: Applicants must be currently undertaking an Australian Senior Secondary Certificate (i.e. the HSC) or equivalent. Applicants who have completed their schooling in the previous two years are also eligible to apply provided they have not commenced any tertiary study in the meantime.
Applicants will be assessed on the basis of academic merit, leadership qualities at school and the wider community, and contribution to the wider community through activities such as community service and sporting participation.
The applicant’s family home, for at least the last four years of the applicant’s high school years, must have been located in an outer regional or remote rural area of NSW, with preference given to applicants from more isolated areas.
